HIGHLIGHTS FROM WORLD ENERGY DAY CELEBRATIONS 2016

The WED celebrations were marked in Kenya for the very first time in 2016- with different organizations registering with Eenovators and pledging to conduct energy saving initiatives within their organizations, during the entire week preceding the World Energy Day starting from 17th October and climaxing on 22nd October. These celebrations were a great stride towards making the energy conversation a staple within the country and succeeded in creating buzz and awareness of the need for energy innovation, conservation, and efficiency.
A raft of energy related activities were undertaken with some of the key highlights from the pioneer celebrations in 2016 captured below

Corporate Participation in World Energy Day

Kisima Farm team participated in World Energy Day by amongst a number of activities conducting training on energy conservation for the staff to give them tips on making their lives easier by using clean sources of energy. This year, Kisima Farm managed to gain the coveted ERC energy management compliance certificate as a result of their concerted efforts and commitment to environmental sustainability.

The World Energy Day Webinar

World Energy Day celebrations had the privilege of hosting an energy focused Webinar with the energy monitoring Stuart Hartley, Business Manager and Director of Cotopaxi Energy, UK as the key note speaker.

He led a invigorating discussion on the topic: How to Control Energy Costs Using Monitoring and Targeting.

.

The webinar attracted participants from all over the nation who contributed to the topic and engaged in very informative discussions on how best to monitor energy for sustainability.

The World Energy Day Workshop

.

The week of World Energy Day celebrations culminated in workshop held at Strathmore Business School where the speakers, Dr. Justus Simiyu, Solar expert and senior lecturer in Physics at the University of Nairobi and Federico Moccia, the managing director of IcoPower, who provided detailed discourse on renewable energy and power quality, respectively.

World Energy Day Student Innovation Challenge

In a bid to encourage energy innovation in the youth and spur active participation in energy conservation matters, Eenovators ran a student energy innovation challenge.

.

This competition called upon participants to develop and share innovative energy conservation concepts that would provide sustainable solutions.

.

The winner of the competition was Melvis Wachira from Dedan Kimathi University who won the much coveted prize basket of an internship position at Eenovators as well as a weekend getaway, after submitting an innovative idea on improving the efficiency of solar cells.
